James Foster, Associate Researcher at the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics and Planetology, joins Jay Fidell on  Research in Manoa. James shares how his colleagues are collaborating with the USGS to build an earthquake early warning network in Chile based on smartphone technology for a fraction of the price a traditional system would cost.

an earthquake early warning network in Chile based on smartphone for a fraction of the price a traditional system would cost.  We expect this network to improve our ability to warn of impending dangerous shaking and guide response efforts to focus on the areas most affected. It will also
enable us to generate more accurate prediction of any tsunamis that might be generated, improving
local warnings for these hazards.
